Coordinate Systems

In the field of technology the positions of bodies/parts in space are described by help of coordinate systems.

Spatial coordinate systems consist of three axes, which are perpendicular and have the same zero point.

Coordinates in work space

Depending on the workspace and the kinematics of the robot, different types of coordinates are used:

  • Cartesian coordinates,
  • Cylindrical coordinates,
  • spherical coordinates.

Robot coordinates

Depending on the work space and kinematics different coordinate systems with different points of origins are used for the robot programming:

  • Space coordinates,
  • Joint coordinates,
  • Gripper coordinates,
  • Workpiece coordinates.
