Project

SMErobotTM

- The European Initiative for Strengthening the Competitiveness of SMEs in Manufacturing -

is an integrated project within the European 6th Framework Programme with a duration of four years. It started 1st of March in 2005.

Existing automation technologies have been primarily developed for large capital investments. These market solutions are not designed for the manufacturing environments of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) - they are often too inflexible, too large and too expensive.

SMErobot now promises to give new impetus to the introduction of robot technology in small and medium-sized businesses: the EU project is developing an entirely new, modular and interactive generation of robots which, in addition to being quick to install and easy to operate, will also help to make European SMEs more competitive thanks to their cost-effective design.

  • SMErobotTM-systems allow moving automation levels and low life-cycle costs
  • New business models create options for funding and operation of automation solutions, variable, uncertain quantity, short product life and easy qualification of the personnel
  • The value chain from the operational planning of the operation to maintenance is streamlined with regard to the needs of medium-sized end users

The project is coordinated by the Fraunhofer Institut für Produktionstechnik and Automatisierung (IPA) and GPS Gesellschaft für Produktionssysteme GmbH. A central aspect of the project is the involvement of SMEs in the work and structure of the consortium. For this purpose, the SMEEIG, a European Economic Interest Grouping, is founded in which the SMEs can exchange their experiences and needs. The SMEEIG is coordinated by Pro Support BV (Netherlands).
